Breast Cancer Measurements

March 2007
Requested by Anthony S-Y Leong MB, BS, MD

1.    Have you encountered this problem.

*NO* - 11.

2.    How do you measure breast cancers?

4 * gross measurements only

2 * microscopic measurement only

3 * gross and microscopic

Two responders remarked on the inaccuracy of measurement, particularly with diffusely infiltrating lobular carcinoma. One responder each emphasized that needle cores and mammotome excisions should not be measured, the latter because of fragmentation.

3.    Do you provide two measurements, the largest dimension (spicule to spicule) as well as the largest diameter as measured across the spherical part of the tumor?

*No* * 11.
